Series: The Tails of Frederick and Ishbu - Author: Judy Cox - Ages 9+

Mystery of the Burmese Bandicoot

Summary - Frederick is the brave one. Ishbu is the hungry one. The rat brothers live in a cage in Miss Dove's classroom, where they can learn and eat to their hearts content. Then the fateful day arrives when class bully Millicent Mallory teaches them the meaning of the word . . . extermination! No sooner have the two rats fled the school than they embark on the wildest adventure of their lives. They follow the trail of the Burmese Bandicoot, a beautiful and mysterious statue, from the underworld lair of the Big Cheese to a tropical island that may not be the paradise it seems. The brothers trip around the globe by paw, air, and sea reveals a whole new world and reminds them what they value most.

Reviews
"Cox keeps the clever, hilarious and warm-hearted story moving. Once you start reading it’s hard to put the novel down. She has created the sweetest rats you’ve ever met and the other animal characters are a lot of fun, too" - Child Lit Dept. @ San Diego State

"Even though the coincidences are too many and a few flashbacks near the beginning of the book disrupt the flow of the story, Frederick and Ishbu's unexpected trip across the ocean to a tropical island is exciting. The two rats remember bits of information from their classroom life which aid them in their adventure" - Southwest Ohio Libraries

"An endnote provides some facts about rats and bandicoots, as well as the Karni Mata Temple, the Fire Balloon Festival of Myanmar and the Australian Big Bird Race, all of which appear in the story. Fast-paced and suspenseful, this is solid entertainment for the middle-grade reader." - Kirkus Reviews

The Case of the Purloined Professor

Reviews
"Cox is at the top of her game. She does it all in this gripping story: great characterizations, suspense, humor, fantastic dialogue (with believable foreign accents), action, and even a tidbit of romance. More tales of Frederick and Ishbu would be very welcomed." - Child Lit Dept. @ San Diego State

"This book is just perfect for the age group that it is meant for. There is just that perfect amount of mystery and learning combined. Judy Cox does a wonderful job of slipping in factual information without making it appear as though the book is trying to force children to read and learn at the same time." - Fantasy Book Critic
