The Squampkin Patch Written by J.T. Petty - Ages 9+

The Squampkin Patch

What's the Story?
On the run from Porifera, the wicked headmaster of a nasty orphanage, scheming Milton and clever Chloe Nasselrogt (it's pronounced "Nasal Rod") take refuge in an abandoned house, whose last owner inexplicably vanished the Halloween before.

As the pumpkin patch in their new yard grows by leaps and bounds, Milton and Chloe start to suspect that what's growing in the patch may not be pumpkins, but something more monstrous and sinister.  Maybe spending the rest of their lives in a horrible orphanage making zippers wasn't so bad after all.

Readers of JT Petty's darkly humorous thriller will find out why they should respect their candy and fear their vegetables.

What's the Buzz?
"Though the build-up is to Halloween, I wouldn’t want to lose this book the other eleven months of the year. It is definitely suspenseful, sometimes scary and creepy, too. But it is also filled with dark humor and interesting characters." - Mother Reader
"Petty brings together a cast of odd figures, a generous sprinkling of smart puns and clever wordplay, and a delightfully absurd plot to create a book that is serious about being funny, but never takes itself too seriously. Best of all, The Squampkin Patch is funny and suspenseful (even a bit grim near the end)." - Three Silly Chicks
"Kudos to Petty: his raucous read has everything middle grade readers yearn for--fanciful scenarios, funny-sounding words, suspense, and kids fixing their own screw-ups." - Children's Lit
"What happens when you cross a Lemony Snicket title and The Rocky Horror Picture Show? You get this novel about deadly squash-pumpkin hybrids, two unpronounceably surnamed not-quite-orphans’ ... and a villain who makes Count Olaf seem benevolent." -Kirkus Reviews
